What is the new Starlink V5?

Starlink V5 is SpaceX’s latest compact standard residential satellite terminal.

Like the current Starlink Standard, it uses an electronically steered phased-array antenna rather than a mechanically rotating dish.

The V5 terminal measures approximately:

384 mm × 306 mm × 34 mm

and weighs:

1.1 kg.

For comparison, the current Gen 3 / V4 Standard terminal measures approximately:

594 mm × 383 mm × 39.7 mm

and weighs approximately:

2.9 kg.

That makes V5 around 62% lighter than the current Standard terminal and roughly 48% smaller by face area.

For professional installers working on Australian roofs, that is a significant change.


Why Starlink V5 could be easier to install

The reduction in size and weight is not simply a cosmetic redesign.

Handling a large satellite terminal while working at roof height becomes substantially easier when the terminal weighs just over one kilogram rather than almost three kilograms.

The smaller terminal should mean:

However, the specification should not be interpreted as meaning that any mounting method will withstand those conditions.

The supplied Router Mini may be more important than the dish speed

Starlink V5 is supplied with the Starlink Router Mini.

The neatest path is not always the shortest path, and the shortest path is not always the safest installation.

4. Create a proper building entry

Bringing a Starlink cable through an open window or door may work temporarily, but it is rarely an appropriate permanent installation.

A permanent installation should provide a suitable weather-resistant cable entry and an appropriate internal finish.

This is particularly important on Australian roofs where preventing water ingress is obviously critical.

5. Decide where the router and network equipment should live

The external Starlink terminal position should not dictate the entire internal network layout.

A customer may ask us to install Starlink because they need internet at the house.

But the real requirement may include connectivity at:

Can Starlink V5 be installed on a shed and sent back to the house?

Yes, and in some properties this can actually be the best solution.

If a house is surrounded by trees but a nearby shed has an unobstructed view of the sky, the Starlink terminal may perform better when mounted to the shed.

The Starlink connection can then potentially be transported back to the home using an appropriate network connection.

Depending on distance and site conditions, options may include:

This approach can avoid installing an unnecessarily tall mast at the house simply because the router is expected to be located there.

The best Starlink position and the best network position do not need to be the same place.

Should you choose V5 or Starlink Mini?

Despite their similar weight, the two terminals are designed for very different applications.

Starlink V5 is likely to be the better choice for:

  • farms

  • fixed installations where higher network performance is desirable.

Starlink Mini remains better suited to:

  • caravanning
  • camping

The Mini is fundamentally a portable Starlink.

Is Starlink V5 suitable for an off-grid property?

Potentially very much so.

The reduction from approximately 75–100 W with the current Standard terminal to approximately 35–50 W with V5 could make a substantial difference to a battery-powered property.

Using the midpoint of Starlink’s published power ranges as a simple example:

  • Gen 3 / V4 Standard: approximately 2.1 kWh per day
  • Starlink V5: approximately 1.02 kWh per day
  • Starlink Mini: approximately 0.78 kWh per day.

Actual consumption varies, but the difference illustrates how significant V5’s efficiency improvement could be.

For a system running 24 hours per day, saving around one kilowatt-hour of energy every day is meaningful.


Can Starlink V5 be used while driving?

No.

Starlink states that V5 is not intended for in-motion operation.

Customers requiring Starlink while travelling should look at hardware officially supported for in-motion operation, such as Starlink Mini, combined with an appropriate Starlink service plan.

A V5 could potentially be used as a stationary system at a campsite or temporary location subject to the customer’s Starlink plan, but it should not be treated as a replacement for Mini in a mobile installation.


Does Starlink V5 need professional installation?

Starlink quotes up to approximately 204 m² of coverage, but actual performance depends heavily on building construction and router placement.

Can Starlink be extended to another building?

The Starlink terminal may deliver hundreds of megabits to a home, but the overall experience still depends on correct antenna placement, secure mounting, proper cable entry and a Wi-Fi network designed for the building.

That becomes even more important on farms, acreage and larger properties where connectivity may need to extend well beyond one room or even one building.

The V5 should make the first part of that system easier.

A good installation makes sure the rest of it works too.
